Research by Verdict Research shows that the amount of money spent by consumers online grew by 35% to £14.7bn last year.

The retail analysts suggest that faster and cheaper internet access was driving the growth, and forecast that sales would reach £44.9bn by 2012, about 13.8% of total spending.

When asked why they shopped online, the most common response from the 4,000 consumers asked was that they wanted to make better use of leisure time.
