Jo on her motivations for starting a business...

“I wanted to have a baby and in my previous job I was working a minimum of 12-hour days, so I knew I wasn’t going to be able to have a baby in my previous career.

“I developed my business through networking. I got to know a lot of people in the local community, and that’s where the networking group came from. It wasn’t a plan to get involved in the local community, but because I did it helped me to grow my business.

“Internet marketing is mainly about online networking, and offline networking is something I’ve been involved in the last four and a half years while I’ve been running my business, so it was a natural transfer onto the internet.”

On what you should consider when starting a home-based business…

“You must be quite clear where you’re going to set up in the house and how you’re going to organise it. It’s very important to think about the technical aspect and how people can contact you.

“Check if there are any legal requirements from the local council in regards to how you can operate a business from home. If you have people coming to the house regularly, working from home can cause issues, so it’s worth doing research beforehand.”

On the pros and cons of working from home…

“You can end up working 24/7, because the office is there in your house. On the flip side, you don't have to travel to work.

“I go to my daughter’s school and do more things with her during the day, which I would never have been able to do if I was in a corporate role.”
