Rotherham has been crowned the UK’s most enterprising place in the UK.
The south Yorkshire town, which won the accolade at Global Entrepreneurship Week’s Annual Enterprising Britain Awards, has endured a tough history following the collapse of the coal and steel industries in the 1980s and has suffered persistently high unemployment rates for many years. The news will boost a community ranked among the most deprived in the country.

Rotherham Ready is a project that aims to transform the aspirations of young people by creating a culture of entrepreneurialism. The scheme has helped introduce children as young as four to the concept of starting a business, and it has also trained teachers to incorporate enterprise into the school’s curriculum.
Rotherham Ready has been a great success, with 232 new businesses started by young people in the town in the past five years.
Project manager Jackie Frost said: “This award means so much to the people of Rotherham and we are absolutely delighted to win.
“Enterprising Britain has not only been a fantastic opportunity to celebrate what has been achieved through Rotherham Ready, it has enabled us to share what we have learnt to inspire other communities that want to embrace enterprise.”
