Personality can be more important in leaders than technical ability, according to one leadership expert.
John Fay MBE, who founded change management firm SFL in 2003, said softer skills will become key in future years as employers focus on people skills alongside paper qualifications.
"You only have to look at national positions to see how social abilities can reign over intellectual skills,” says Fay.
"Take Fabio Capello's recruitment as England manager.
“Did he implement new rules on the pitch or a variation in training? No, his priorities were initially to encourage the team to eat together and to ban mobiles during mealtimes.
"Capello understands social manners and building a team relationship through social interaction are important, and once this is in place he can focus on team performance on pitch."
The political rivalry between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown was a badly kept secret for years but Fay argues that Blair's initial popularity with the public was a result of his personality rather than his political motivations.
"Tony Blair won fans with his charisma and public speaking ability but his political decisions were not always popular,” says Fay.
“Gordon Brown is a different matter.
"The current Prime Minister receives regular criticism for his dour look and his lack of passion when addressing Parliament members and the electorate alike.
"Although he is a professional, he is sometimes guarded and voters feel they cannot get close to him without seeing his personality.”
