Rowan Gormley on winning the Business Start-ups of the Year awards...

“It felt lovely, what was particularly nice about it was thanking all the people that make our business possible. We’re in the wine market and customers invest the money to finance young wine makers, so it was great to thank our customers.

“Everyone places a lot of trust in us, and it’s lovely for us, but it's also nice for our customers to feel like the company they are part of has been recognised.”

It is a very tough business, the supermarkets have huge buying power and very low margins – and the wine business is shrinking

On setting up in a competitive industry...

“It is a very tough business. The supermarkets have huge buying power and very low margins – and the wine business is shrinking.

“The advice I’d give to someone coming into the wine business would be not to copy others – you’ve got to do something new and offer people something they can’t get anywhere else. It’s not about marketing and all the rest of it; it’s about human relationships.”

On future plans for the business...

“We want to grow. The more angel investors we have the better wine for everyone involved.

“We want to discover more wine makers and get deeper into the business. We’ve found a model that works and now we want to really expand and roll it out.”
