Emergency Budget: Two-year pay freeze for public sector

George Osborne

Public sector workers will have their pay frozen for two years, Chancellor George Osborne has announced.

“The country was living beyond its means before the recession” according to the Chancellor, as he announced a two year public sector pay freeze for those earning over £21,000.

Despite this pay freeze, the 1.7 million lowest paid will receive a £250 pay rise.

Meanwhile, tax credit payments to families earning over £40,000 will be abolished next year, while child benefit will be frozen for the next three years.

Maximum limits on housing benefit will also be introduced.
