But, while there are hundreds of franchises to choose from, a recession can make it difficult to ascertain which franchise could have recession beating potential, while offering a prosperous business opportunity for the future.

One such franchise sector that appears to be bucking the ailing trend is the home improvement arena. With the property market suffering under the faltering economy and tighter restrictions on mortgage lending, could homeowners attention be shifting from moving to improving their existing properties?

BusinessWings spoke with Mark Riley, the support franchise director of Bespoke Garage Conversions, about whether buying a home improvement franchise could be a smart move in a downturn.
