A series of roadshows are being held nationwide to market a gold-plating business opportunity.
Laban Roomes has set up Goldgenie, which offers the equipment and training to enable you to gold-plate anything from “golf clubs, bathroom taps, jewellery, car badges – even flowers.”
For those entrepreneurs not outraged by the concept of gold-plating a flower, Roomes promises “quite literally a golden opportunity for ordinary people to launch their own businesses at low cost and make serious money.”
The London-based businessman plans to market his Goldgenie gold-plating system across the country at a number of ‘GoldRush Roadshows’.
"Massive demand"
Roomes, 36, who has been mentored by Yo! Sushi founder and ex-Dragon’s Den panellist Simon Woodroffe, supplied dozens of his £800, 24-carat gold plated mobile phones to dozens of superstars at the Emmy Awards last year.
“Goldplating has become very fashionable,” says Roomes, who is currently filming a BBC TV programme about the global gold market.
“There is a massive demand out there and that’s why we have set up this new business opportunity.”
The free roadshows, he says, “will reveal the secrets of running a highly profitable business without a huge investment or the need for extensive training. This is more about prospecting with gold than prospecting for gold.”
Roomes’ business partner Terry George says they were encouraged to market their gold-plating system more widely after initial demonstrations attracted a lot of attention.
“We did our market research with the Goldgenie Pro 900 system at a recent business start-up trade fair at London’s ExCeL Centre,” he says.
“Hundreds of people watched the demonstrations and as a result we decided to roll out this new business opportunity.”
What do start-up entrepreneurs get for their money?
“The overall entry costs just £1,995 (excluding VAT) and that buys rights to a designated postcode area. Goldgenie provides comprehensive product training and a full day’s marketing assistance, complete with flyers, posters and a complete DIY press release guide.
“Over £2k worth of plating chemicals are included in the price, enabling the operator to fully recover the initial cost of buy-in. Users get the benefits of a franchise but without having to pay an ongoing monthly percentage of turnover or profit.”
The Goldgenie package also includes two gold-plating machines, the Pro 900 and its entry level Pro 100 sibling, plus all accessories needed to get the business started.
Bolton-based mother-of-two Tracy Littler and her partner Lee Foster bought a Goldgenie Pro 900 system and is happy with her investment.
“We have two small children and we needed to make more money but with flexible hours,” she says.
“We started off with gold-plating Zippo lighters, key rings and car badges and we have also chrome–plated customers’ motorcycle parts, but now I’m going flat out trying to win business from some large companies. British Aerospace has factories nearby and they are a potentially lucrative client for us.
“We are delighted with our investment – in fact it’s a life-changing experience.
“We haven’t remortgaged our home to do this – all we’ve done is sell an old motorbike.
“This business is going to be full-time for both of us, and nobody else is telling us what to do or when we have to work.”
Shropshire-based businessman and precious metals expert Peter Jones runs Peter Jones Gold & Silver Supplies from his HQ at Whittington Business Park, Oswestry. He spends hours at car boot sales looking for items he can refurbish and resell and has found the gold-plating system useful in raising the value of goods.
“I recently bought a battered old Mappin & Webb teapot for £2. I had one of my staff clean it up and replate it before selling it on for £40,” he says.
“And in another classic case I bought a damaged teapot worth no more than 50p. It took me a day to restore it to its former glory and then I sold it for £460.”
